Heavy-Gauge Cafe Mugs

Enamel does not usually fail on its own. It fails because the steel underneath it moved. A thin-gauge mug dents when it is dropped into a bus tub, and the glass over that dent has nowhere to go, so it crazes and lifts. The chip you see is the symptom; the deformation is the cause.

So for commercial service we build on heavier gauge steel and put three coats on it. The mug is noticeably weightier in the hand, which customers read as quality and which is really just the specification doing its job.
