Classic Rolled-Rim Enamel Mugs

Look at any enamel mug that has been in service a year and the damage will be in the same place: around the lip. It is knocked against taps, stacked on other mugs, and dropped rim-first more often than any other part.

A rolled rim solves it by simply not having enamel there. The steel is rolled over on itself at the lip and left as bare stainless, so the most-hit edge on the mug is metal rather than glass. It cannot chip because there is nothing brittle to chip, and it will not rust because it is stainless rather than the mild steel underneath the enamel.

Underneath, this is a multi-coat build: a ground coat that bonds to the steel and cover coats over it. A single thin direct-on coat is cheaper and chips at about the rate you would expect. We will tell you how many coats we are quoting, which nobody does unprompted.

Why is the rim left as bare metal?

How many coats should an enamel mug have?

More than one. A ground coat bonds to the steel and the cover coats give you the colour and the depth. A single direct-on coat is thinner, chips more readily and is what most low-cost mugs are. Ask; if the answer is vague, assume one.
